Profile:
Aditya Basak is a renowned Indian painter, recognized for his ability to explore the deeper, darker aspects of the human subconscious through his art. A graduate of the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata (1977), Basak’s works are often characterized by their unsettling and haunting nature, merging harsh realities with surreal, dream-like elements. His use of light, shadow, and muted colors, along with symbolic elements like onlookers and telescopes, creates an immersive experience for the viewer, who is invited to explore the unseen realms of the mind.
Basak’s thematic approach goes beyond mere aesthetic beauty, as his works often serve as a commentary on the illogical chaos of modern life. His use of surrealism pushes boundaries, allowing him to delve into the murky depths of the human psyche, making his works not just visually captivating, but also emotionally and intellectually stimulating.
In addition to his individual artistic pursuits, Basak is deeply committed to social causes. He has participated in charitable art events such as the Art for Spastics Auction in Chennai and People for Animals, organized by Maneka Gandhi, showcasing his belief that art and social responsibility are interconnected. His commitment to these causes further solidifies his position as an artist who is not just focused on personal expression but also on societal impact.
Throughout his career, Basak has exhibited his works in several notable solo and group exhibitions. Some of his prominent solo exhibitions include his shows in New York (1999), Art Today in New Delhi (2002), and at Art World, Chennai (2004). Group exhibitions have taken place across India and internationally, including "Art of Bengal" at the NGMA in Mumbai and "Art on Paper" at CIMA, Kolkata (2002). He has also participated in numerous art camps and workshops in countries such as Australia, Thailand, the UK, and China.
Basak has been an active participant in exhibitions hosted by Aakriti Art Gallery in Kolkata, where his works have been showcased alongside other leading contemporary artists. His involvement with Aakriti Art Gallery further highlights his role in the modern Indian art scene, contributing to exhibitions that explore figurative and surrealistic themes.
Basak has been the recipient of prestigious awards, including the National Award for Painting by the Lalit Kala Akademi (1986) and the State Government Award (1988).
