‘The word genius has rarely been used in this column, but it is the correct term for Mr. Satish Gujral.’ – Dr Charles Fabri

Satish Gujral’s works are an incredible example of the personal being political. As a refugee of the 1947 Partition, his works exemplified pain and agony of the personal experience, which was also a part of the collective consciousness. With a career spanning more than five decades, he has displayed mastery over multiple mediums.

Satish was born in 1925, to a Punjabi family in Jhelum. His idyll childhood was abruptly interrupted due to his loss of hearing due to an accident. His love for art and literature continues to grow right from his childhood. His training in art began with Mayo School of Art in Lahore. During this time he became associated with leading voices from the subcontinent; namely Faiz Ahmaed Faiz, Kishen Chander and Ali Sardar Jafferi.  He later joined the J.J School of Art where he met S.H Raza, F.N Souza and others. The Partition had a deep impact on him and his family. In the aftermath, he spent his time between Shimla and Delhi working on what came to be known as partition paintings. He received a scholarship to Mexico to learn mural painting where he trained under Diego Rivera. His experiments cover almost all spheres that fall under the umbrella of Plastic Art, Graphics, Paintings, Sculpture Murals, Object Design and Architecture. 


In recognition of his national and international achievements, "Delhi Citizen Council" in 1989 honoured him as one of the twenty five most prominent of its Citizens with the most significant contributions to the prestige of the city made in the last quarter century.

 From 1952 to 1974 Gujral had shows all around the world and has won numerous national and international awards.

Awards :

The Belgian Government honoured Gujral with the "ORDER OF THE CROWN" for designing the Belgian Embassy. The same building was selected by International Jury among 1000 most outstanding buildings built in the 20th Century around the World. His name is included in the "International Dictionary of Art\" published by Macmillan, U.K; the dictionary is of World Art through the Ages and included only 40,000 names. He is three times National Award Winner: Twice for Painting and once for Sculpture. He is also honored by Delhi and Punjab State as well as Shanti Niketan with its highest honor "Desikottama". He was honored by Mexico\'s International Award for "Life Time Achievements" (Da Vinci Award).

It is in recognition of these achievements that the President of India honored Satish Gujral in the year 1999 with "Padma Vibhushan", the second highest honor awarded by the State.
