The Aakriti Art Gallery Trophy – A Bronze by Asim Basu

On the occasion of the Special Race Day at the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), Pune, Aakriti Art Gallery is delighted to present the Aakriti Art Gallery Trophy as part of the Supreme Pune City Gold Cup Day on 13th September 2025.

The winner of this race was awarded a specially commissioned bronze trophy created by eminent sculptor Asim Basu (b. 1947), a senior Indian artist whose works are held in prestigious collections such as the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and the Birla Academy, Kolkata. Trophy received by Dr Cyrus Poonawala.

An alumnus of the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, Basu is celebrated for his distinctive sculptural language—rooted in modernist abstraction yet deeply connected to everyday life. Executed in the lost-wax bronze technique, his works are admired for their textured surfaces, compositional harmony, and sensitive portrayal of human bonds, humor, and tenderness. His sculptures distill fleeting, intimate moments—whether a mother with her child, friends in conversation, or figures in repose—into timeless bronze expressions.

This specially chosen trophy embodies his philosophy of elevating the ordinary into the extraordinary. Its presentation at RWITC not only celebrates the triumph of the winning connections but also brings the legacy of contemporary Indian art into dialogue with the heritage of Indian racing.
