Amalnath Chakladar

(b.1969)

Amalnath Chakladar was a distinguished painter whose practice reflects a sustained engagement with the observed world and the poetics of nature, setting him apart from the revivalist tendencies of the Bengal School. Born in present-day Bangladesh, Chakladar received his formal training at the Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta, graduating in 1960. His academic grounding provided a strong foundation in draughtsmanship and technique, which remained central to his artistic language throughout his career.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who turned toward mythology and classical Indian themes, Chakladar drew inspiration directly from nature and everyday life. His works are characterised by a lyrical sensitivity to natural phenomena—flowing water, drifting breeze, birds in flight, and the delicate textures of grass and foliage. These elements are not merely descriptive but are rendered with an acute observational intensity that transforms them into contemplative visual experiences.

Chakladar’s paintings demonstrate a remarkable command over medium and technique, working across various formats while maintaining precision and clarity. His controlled and refined brushwork, particularly evident in his smaller compositions, reveals an attention to detail and a disciplined approach to form. The balance between observation and interpretation gives his works both immediacy and quiet depth.

In addition to his artistic practice, Chakladar was associated with art education and later served as an Assistant Professor at the Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta, contributing to the academic and institutional framework of art in Bengal.

He participated in several important exhibitions, including the Centenary Celebration of the Sepoy Mutiny (1957) and Bengal Art Today in Hyderabad (1992), among others. His work received recognition through honours such as the Rajya Charukala Pradarshani Award.

Chakladar’s works are held in public and private collections in India and abroad, reflecting sustained appreciation for his nuanced and technically accomplished practice.

He is represented by Aakriti Art Gallery, Kolkata.
