Priyanka Lahiri is a contemporary Indian painter whose practice combines figurative imagery, symbolic detail, and social observation. Born in 1980 in Howrah, West Bengal, she received her Master of Visual Arts in Painting from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, and also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Art Appreciation. Her academic training provided her with a strong foundation in painting while encouraging a critical engagement with art history and visual culture.
The female figure occupies a central place in Lahiri’s work. Rather than treating women as passive subjects, she often presents them as complex psychological presences shaped by memory, social expectations, intimacy, and personal experience. Her figures may appear introspective, isolated, or surrounded by objects and symbolic forms that suggest an underlying narrative.
Lahiri’s compositions frequently move between observed reality and imaginative construction. Everyday objects, bodily gestures, architectural fragments, and natural motifs are brought together within carefully organised pictorial spaces. These elements may initially appear familiar, yet their relationships remain open-ended. The viewer is invited to interpret the emotional and social tensions suggested by the image rather than follow a fixed story.
A recurring concern in her practice is the relationship between individual identity and the wider socio-cultural environment. Through the female protagonist, Lahiri examines questions of belonging, emotional confinement, vulnerability, self-awareness, and the pressures placed upon women in contemporary society. Her paintings therefore combine visual beauty with a quieter undercurrent of critique.
She works across oil, acrylic, and mixed media on canvas. Her surfaces reveal close attention to colour, texture, and the interaction between figure and background. At times, the figure is clearly defined; elsewhere, it appears partially absorbed into the surrounding field. This shifting relationship between presence and concealment contributes to the contemplative quality of her work. The Aakriti Art Gallery collection records examples of her practice from mixed-media works of the late 2000s to later paintings in acrylic and oil.
Exhibitions and Recognition
Lahiri has participated in exhibitions in India and abroad. Important presentations include Art Against Terrorism organised by Aakriti Art Gallery, Kolkata; an exhibition of contemporary art organised by the SAARC Women’s Organization in Dhaka in 2009; exhibitions at the Birla Academy of Art & Culture and the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata; the Camlin Art Foundation Annual Exhibitions; and Charukala Utsav, organised by the Government of West Bengal.
She has also participated in workshops organised by Aakriti and Emami Chisel Art, the Rotary Club, the College of Visual Arts, the Kolkata Information Centre, and the West Bengal Forest Department. Her early achievements were recognised through the Kishori Lal Roy Award in 2005 and the Biman Bihari Das Scholarship for 2006–07, both associated with the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata.
Association with Aakriti Art Gallery
Priyanka Lahiri was selected for GenNext III, organised by Aakriti Art Gallery in 2008. The third edition expanded GenNext into an international platform, bringing together artists from India and abroad after a competitive selection process. Archival records also show her participation in the following edition of GenNext and note that her work subsequently received attention from galleries across India.
Her continued association with Aakriti includes participation in curated exhibitions such as Art Against Terrorism and Image and Symbol: Painters’ Perceptions, as well as the gallery’s ongoing representation of a substantial group of her paintings.
Priyanka Lahiri’s practice is distinguished by its combination of formal skill, psychological suggestion, and socially aware figuration. Through images centred on women and their lived environments, she creates paintings that are intimate in feeling yet connected to wider questions of identity, social experience, and contemporary life.
