Supam Adhikary is a contemporary Indian painter whose practice combines figurative imagery, symbolic suggestion, and a strong sense of visual narrative. Born in 1972, he belongs to a generation of artists from Bengal who developed their practices during a period of significant change in Indian contemporary art, when traditional skills in drawing and painting increasingly entered into dialogue with personal psychology, urban experience, and conceptual enquiry.
Adhikary received his Diploma in Fine Arts from the Indian Society of Oriental Art, Kolkata. The institution’s emphasis on drawing, composition, and the history of Indian visual traditions provided an important foundation for his artistic development. His paintings demonstrate technical confidence while remaining open to experimentation in imagery, colour, and pictorial space.
The human figure occupies an important place in his work. Rather than presenting the figure solely as a descriptive or portrait-based subject, Adhikary frequently uses it to explore interior states, relationships, memory, solitude, and the ambiguities of contemporary existence. His compositions often suggest an unfolding narrative, although the meaning is rarely stated directly. Figures, objects, gestures, and surrounding spaces are brought together in ways that encourage interpretation rather than provide a fixed story.
A notable quality of his work is the tension between the visible and the unspoken. His solo exhibitions include Super Cognition at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, in 2001, and An Eloquent Silence at Gallery Chemould, Kolkata, in 2002. The titles themselves indicate central concerns within his practice: perception, consciousness, silence, and the difficulty of giving visible form to internal experience.
He has also participated in group exhibitions and art initiatives, including Rapport in 2002, the INFOCOM Exhibition in 2005, and an art camp in 2005. In 2001, he received the Lilabati K. Shah Memorial Award, recognising his early contribution to painting.
Association with Aakriti Art Gallery
Supam Adhikary participated in the GenNext exhibition organised by Aakriti Art Gallery in 2006. The GenNext programme was conceived as a platform for identifying and presenting promising younger artists whose practices demonstrated technical ability, individuality, and the potential for sustained development.
His inclusion in GenNext placed him within Aakriti Art Gallery’s continuing programme of supporting emerging and mid-career artists from Bengal and other regions of India. His work has subsequently remained connected with the gallery’s exhibition, collection, and documentation initiatives.
