Prasenjit Sengupta is a contemporary Indian painter known for his technically accomplished realist compositions and his sustained engagement with the human figure. Born in 1964 in Siliguri, West Bengal, he completed his Bachelor of Visual Arts from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata.
Sengupta’s practice is marked by close observation, disciplined draughtsmanship, and an exceptional sensitivity to surface, texture, and tonal variation. While many of his contemporaries turned towards abstraction or expressive figuration, he remained committed to a carefully constructed form of realism. His figures are rendered with precision, yet his paintings often move beyond straightforward representation.
Although highly realistic in appearance, Sengupta’s works frequently possess an underlying surreal or psychologically charged quality. Familiar forms are placed within carefully controlled pictorial spaces, creating a sense of distance, ambiguity, and quiet tension. This combination of visual exactitude and emotional uncertainty gives his work a distinctive character.
A defining feature of his painting is the restrained use of colour. Sengupta often works within a limited tonal range, allowing subtle shifts in light, shadow, edge, and texture to determine the structure of the image. His surfaces are meticulously developed, and the smallest variations in tone contribute to the atmosphere and depth of the composition. Scale, technical control, and finely modulated detail remain central to his visual language.
Sengupta has held several solo exhibitions at important venues across India. These include exhibitions at the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, with Gallery Sanskriti in 2005 and 2007; Gallery Sanskriti, Kolkata, in 2007; Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 1994, presented with RPG; Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Kolkata, in 1994; and a solo presentation in Varanasi in 1996 with ABC India Ltd.
He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions and art camps in India and abroad. His works are represented in several public and private collections in India and internationally.
Through his mastery of realism, controlled palette, and subtle psychological suggestion, Prasenjit Sengupta has developed a distinctive position within contemporary Indian painting.
