Manoj Mitra

(b.1970)

Manoj Mitra is an eminent Indian contemporary artist whose practice reflects a refined engagement with figuration, abstraction, and the lyrical possibilities of colour and surface. Born in 1953 in Kolkata, West Bengal, Mitra received his formal training from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, graduating in 1977. His artistic formation emerged within the vibrant post-independence modernist milieu of Bengal, where experimentation and individual expression became central to contemporary artistic discourse.

In 1984, Mitra became a member of the prestigious Society of Contemporary Artists (SCA), one of India’s oldest and most influential artist collectives, known for nurturing progressive artistic practices in eastern India.

Over the course of his career, Mitra has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions across major cultural centres including Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bengaluru. His works reveal a sustained exploration of emotional atmosphere through restrained compositions and subtle tonal relationships. Working across a wide range of media—including oil, acrylic, mixed media, pen and ink, charcoal, and watercolour—the artist demonstrates remarkable versatility while maintaining a consistent visual sensitivity.

A defining characteristic of Mitra’s work is his muted and contemplative colour palette, where softened tonal transitions and understated chromatic harmonies create an atmosphere of quiet introspection. His compositions often balance structural clarity with painterly fluidity, allowing forms to emerge gradually through layers of texture and gesture. This sensitivity to material and surface lends his paintings a meditative quality that engages viewers beyond narrative immediacy.

Mitra’s artistic achievements have been recognised through several important honours, including the Governor’s Award (1975 & 1976), the Academy of Fine Arts Award (1977), and the 4th Government of West Bengal Exhibition Award (1988). Earlier in his career, he also received a Certificate of Merit from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata in 1974.

His works are represented in important institutional collections, including the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, and the Glenbarra Art Museum, Japan, alongside numerous private collections in India and abroad.

Manoj Mitra’s oeuvre reflects a sustained commitment to painterly experimentation and poetic restraint, positioning him among the significant voices in the continuum of contemporary art in Bengal.
