Manoj Mitra is a contemporary Indian painter whose practice is distinguished by a lyrical synthesis of the human figure and the natural world. Born in 1953 in Kolkata, West Bengal, he graduated from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, in 1977. In 1984, he became a member of the Society of Contemporary Artists, one of Kolkata’s important post-Independence artist collectives.
Mitra works across a wide range of media, including oil, acrylic, watercolour, charcoal, pen and ink, and mixed media. Despite this technical diversity, his oeuvre retains a consistent visual sensibility. Female figures recur frequently in his paintings, often appearing in close association with flowers, foliage, birds, and other natural forms. Rather than functioning as conventional portraits, these figures become part of a larger poetic environment in which the human body and nature appear closely interconnected.
His compositions are characterised by a subdued and carefully controlled palette. Muted colours, softened tonal transitions, and restrained contrasts lend the paintings an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. Form often emerges gradually from layered surfaces, allowing figuration and abstraction to coexist within the same pictorial field. The resulting images possess a dreamlike quality while remaining grounded in disciplined drawing and compositional balance.
Mitra’s art resists dramatic narrative. Instead, it creates an intimate space shaped by memory, solitude, femininity, and the rhythms of nature. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. His artistic achievements were recognised early through the Certificate of Merit from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata (1974), the Governor’s Award in 1975 and 1976, the Academy of Fine Arts Award (1977), and an award at the Fourth Government of West Bengal Exhibition (1988).
Manoj Mitra’s paintings are held in major institutional collections, including the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, and the Glenbarra Art Museum, Japan, as well as private collections in India and abroad.
Through his sustained exploration of figuration, nature, and subtle chromatic relationships, Manoj Mitra has developed a distinctive painterly language marked by technical versatility, poetic restraint, and contemplative depth.
