Role of a Curator in an Art Gallery
An archived discussion organized by 'Art and Deal', 'Art Etc' and 'Art News and Views' on the July 17th 2010, on the 'Role of a Curator in an Art Gallery', at Art Konsult Art Gallery,23, Hauz Khaz Village, New Delhi. It was a panel discussion to understand the role of a curator and the language of curating in an art gallery space, means to be a curator in the contemporary Indian art scenario. The invited panelist of the discussion was Amit Mukhopadhyay, Vibha Galhotra, Kishore Singh, Deepak Tandon, Rahul Bhattacharya, Ajay Rajgharia with the discussants, gallery owners and artists such as Siddhatha Tagore, Vikram Bachhawat, Manu Dosaj, Probir Gupta, Mithu Sen, G.R.Iranna, Pushpmala, Pratul Das, Kanchan Chander, Romain Moitra, etc,. It started with the concept note of the discussion and continued with the views of the panelists as well as discussants, the curator now is not a single entity he plays many different role then the traditional meaning of a curator as a curator. Amit Mukhopadhyay talked as a curator and as an art historian about the recent past when curators were commissioned as a curator but they never used to give the curatiorial note which now has become a necessity of a curated show, which also depicts the growth of the Indian Modern Art. The first experience of art has always been curated by the Museums and the National Galleries such as National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) but on the late 90's the new meaning of the curator was adapted by us and also builds the question about the current role of a curator, the expectation of a curator has even increased he is supposed to be known to all the areas and also the interpretation of a curator should not to be done in a shallow manner too, commented by Rahul Bhattacharya. While the artists were in opinion that there should be a dialogue between the artist and the curator, with the curatorial note, artist should give their best to be curated by the curator as it enhances and give a new and particular perspective to the work of art. The shifts in the art even being noticed by the artist as well as by the onlookers during the period when the shifts in the economy, social conditions, etc, were came in front due to which the role of a artist as well as the curator has changed from that of the traditional one.
