Mrinalini Mukherjee
15th April to 15th May
Gallery Espace
Mrinalini Mukherjee is a veteran sculptor who has been living and working in Delhi for a long time. In the present exhibition she is displaying sculptures of small, medium and large scale. Enthused by nature, its energies and elements, her recent bronzes are redolent of the surfeit of plant life contained by anthropomorphic statuaries and where leafy tendrils cover the walls and pillars.
The shapes the sculptor creates, using the lost-wax process of casting are emblematic of continuous movement and growth, enjoying a quality of living plants that come out and grow into flowers. The sculptures entwined meticulously with hemp ropes in earthy or rich glowing colours evoke a productive world of escalating life, lush vegetation, and iconic figures. The strong note of sexuality is marked in the phallic forms, the mysterious folds and lips, the intricate curves and swathes. There is a sensuous, tactile quality to her work which exercises a compelling hold on the viewer.
