The February issue of ART news & views will be dedicated to modern masters from India had already been announced. But we were encouraged by the way our first issue in the series  Two Decades of Indian Artwas received last month.

In this issue, we focus on modern Indian masters, most of whom form part of the travelling show by the Glenberra art museum. We focus expressly on Tyeb Mehta, FN Souza, Krishen Khanna, Bikash Bhattacharya, Gulam Mohammed Sheikh, J Swaminathan, Arpita Singh, Jogen Chowdhury, Prabhakar Barwe, Anish Kapoor and of course SH Raza.

The cover story in the current issue is by Nanak Ganguly on Tyeb Mehta. Ashok Vajpayee writes on SH Raza, while Saba Gulraiz gives an overview of Indian art. The articles are meant for creating a broader perspective about the rich variety of our masters.

The last two decades (1990-2010) have been crucial for the development of Indian art and its reception in the global market. Starting from the demolition of the Babri Masjid and the open market economic reforms of 1992, followed by a prolonged period marking an unstable government, the boom and the lull have been crucial not only to the evolution of disciplines like architecture and dance, film, literature, music and design but of Indian art as well. We take a close look at all of these in these issues focusing on individual contributors in each field throwing light on the developments, ascents and descents of the Indian contemporary art as we revisit and evaluate the last two decades.
